One of the most prestigious exams of India is the Civil Service examination. Civil service exam is conducted by the UPSC. This article will provide details about the UPSC Civil Service prelims examination.
UPSC full form is the Union Public Service Commission. The headquarters of UPSC is located in New Delhi. The Civil Service exam is conducted by the UPSC to recruit candidates in 24 different services. Some of the most popular and very well-known services are Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), etc. UPSC is not only responsible for recruiting candidates but UPSC is also consulted on matters related to transfer and promotion of Civil Service personnel. With inputs from various quarters, UPSC also updates and develops testing methodologies for recruitments. UPSC makes appointments for Group A and Group B posts. The UPSC is given its powers by the Constitution of India. UPSC is one of the few independently functioning institutions in India, like the Election Commission of India or the Higher Judiciary.
Union Public Service Commission not only conducts Civil Service Examination, but also other exams such as Engineering Services Exam, National Defense Academy Exam, Combined Defense Services Exam, Indian Economic Service – Indian Statistical Service Examination, Combined Geo-Scientist Examination, Central Armed Police Forces Exam, etc.
The UPSC prelims admit card is usually released two to three weeks before the commencement of the examination. In the UPSC prelims (civil service) exam, there will be two papers for a total of 400 marks. These two papers will have objective type questions. There will be multiple choices for a question and the candidates will have to choose the right option. If wrong answers are marked there will be negative marking. Hence it is advisable that candidates only answer the questions for which they are absolutely sure about the right answer. The two papers are General Studies Paper – I, and General Studies Paper – II.
UPSC prelims 2022 will be held on 5th June, 2022. The examination will be conducted in two languages – English and Hindi. The maximum marks that a candidate can score in this examination is 200. The cut-off marks for General Studies Paper – I varies every year. The time duration allotted for General Studies Paper – I is 2 hours. General Studies paper – I of UPSC prelims will have a total of 100 questions. In General Studies Paper – I, 0.66 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer. Here, the negative marking is 1/3rd of the maximum marks for the question.
General Studies (GS) Paper – II will be conducted in English and Hindi. General Studies Paper – II is for a maximum of 200 marks. The duration of the General Studies Paper – II is 2 hours. UPSC prelims GS Paper – II examination will be held on 5th June 2022. The total number of questions in General Studies (GS) Paper – II will be 80. For every incorrect answer 0.83 marks will be deducted. The negative marking will be 1/3rd of the maximum marks for the question.
The General Studies Paper II in UPSC prelims is also known as Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT). The General Studies Paper II will cover English Language Comprehension skills, Data Interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency), General mental ability, Logical Reasoning and Analytical ability, Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.), Decision-making and Problem-solving questions, etc.
The General Studies Paper I Syllabus will cover topics such as general issues on Climate change, Environment, Ecology, Biodiversity, General Science, Space technology, Defense technology, different Social Sector Welfare schemes, Demographics, Poverty, Sustainable Development, Panchayati Raj, Constitution, Public Policy, Indian Geography, World Geography, Indian National Movement, History of India, Current events of National and International Importance.
