The general objective of the José Online Education Forum is to examine the realities of online college and university education and education processes using today’s information technology. Together, the authors of this document have taught more than one hundred different university courses online, both graduates and undergraduate students, using primarily Internet. 1. Introduction
1.1 The Sloan Consortium
In a Sloan-C survey on 1170 Provosts and University VPS, more than half indicated a belief that online education would be “long-term essential” in higher education. Surprisingly perhaps, the same percentage stated that it believed that success in achieving learning outcomes is already equivalent between online and traditional teaching methods. And there was also an opinion consensus among these respondents that the quality of online courses would continue to improve, with a third of them, believing that the quality of online education will soon exceed the typical quality of Conventional education. These opinions can be surprising for many of us in the teaching profession, coming from such high level administrators and influential. They report a fundamental change in perceptions on the potential of online education in the immediate future.
1.2 OVERVIEW
The objective of this article is to investigate and assess why this change of online education occurs. Several factors can be cited starting with improving access to educational services using online technologies and changing paradigms for teaching and learning that integrate with these technologies. Other factors include educational competition and increased globalization, ongoing and often spectacular improvements in online system capabilities and underlying economies for the supply of online education compared to conventional means. The following sections of this article explore each of these factors individually.
